A message from our founder

Hello,

I am Jan, the founder of ‘Fluent in Maths’. I understand that many students struggle with confidence in mathematics, and as exams approach they are under time pressure and stress while they decide which topics to revise.

I understand the learning journey of students, especially those who feel they must rely on themselves as much as they rely on their school. This is because, in my own life, I mostly relied on myself to get the grades that I needed.

My family lived in Africa, moving cities and villages often while I was studying for my GCE O and A levels. There was no school nearby that taught for the British exams that I needed. So I studied via a  ‘distance learning’ service. The internet was not available at the time, so my study material would arrive by post and I would post back my answers to tests for grading.

I can empathise with your child’s challenges in making the optimal use of their time to gain confidence and proficiency. Through the distance learning service, I passed the British O and A level exams  with distinctions in Mathematics and Further Mathematics among other subjects. It did not hurt that my father is a Mathematician and was at hand to talk to. Every learning journey needs one or more guides.

Thanks to the confidence I gained in Mathematics, I went on to read mathematics and computer science at the University of Manchester, graduating at the age of 20 with a first-class degree. I hold a Masters in Applied Mathematics from Imperial college, University of London as well as an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) from INSEAD, a European business school, whose MBA programmes has been ranked among the top 3 in the world by the Financial Times.

I have since taught hundreds of students, and spent thousands of hours honing my skills in how to make the learning journey easier for my students. I have volunteered part-time as a maths teacher at inner city schools in London as well as taught mathematics and programming at Brockwood Park, a world-leading residential independent school in Hampshire.

I am passionate about coaching. When INSEAD launched their online education programmes in 2016, I was excited to get involved and over the past 6 years I have coached over 575 students at INSEAD.

Fluent in Maths is a family passion. My father, who has been a private tutor in London for over a quarter of a century, tutoring 100s of students from some of the leading public schools in England, is part of my team.

Mathematics is a foundational skill for life and is at the heart of many exciting careers. In my own life, I have put mathematics into practice as a quantitative analyst and trader at some of the top investment banks in the world, as an entrepreneur in technology and as a teacher at a leading European business school.

I know how much effort you, as a parent, put into ensuring your child is best equipped for their adult life. I look forward to helping your daughter or son, towards confidence and exam success in the best possible way and of course, success in their choice of university and in life.
