Case Studies: Level Up
At Fluent in Maths, we specialise in ‘levelling up’ students by 2 or more grades in a period of 3 to 6 months. Even more importantly, we build confidence in problem solving and a life-long love of mathematics.

(Year 5 and 6) Anna’s Story
Anna had fallen behind by Year 5 and was scoring between 30% to 40% in class tests. She found fractions and word problems particularly challenging along with decimals, percentages and rounding.
In the summer term of Year 5, Anna joined ‘Fluent in Maths’ and took 2 classes per week every week.
After 6 classes (less than a month), she scored above 72% in school tests. Within four months, her confidence rocketed. At Parents’ events, her school teachers expressed astonishment in the change they saw in Anna. She was moved to the top set for Maths in her school.
Within 7 months of starting to study with us, Anna earned 78% on her first SAT mock exam. In March, she earned above 85% to 95% on SAT past papers.
While in Year 6, Anna’s Maths abilities are now comparable to Year 7 Grammar school students who are starting with us.
(Year 8) Katie’s Story
Katie attends a private school that sets a high standard in Maths. The same mid tests are applied identically to all sets within each year., Katie has been placed in the third set for Maths, and this set is taught more slowly than sets 1 and 2 so they are not taught all the material they are tested on. Katie studies many subjects and is a talented child artist with extra curricular commitments.
After years of performing poorly with scores of less than 40%, Katie lacked confidence in her Maths abilities.
Katie joined ‘Fluent in Maths’ mid way through Year 8 and took 1 class of 45 minutes a week. She needed to improve mental arithmetic, problems solving and all areas of Maths, including fractions, decimals and percentages, measures, algebra and geometry. Two weeks after starting classes, Katie earned 35% in a mid-term school test.
After circa 7 hours of classes over 10 weeks at ‘Fluent in Maths’, Katie was still catching up with material in her school curriculum when she sat for Year 8 end of year exams. Katie scored 85% in Paper 1 of Maths. Due to large parts of the curriculum that we still neded to catch up on, she scored an average of 55% across all papers in Maths and improvement of 20% on her previous scores.
With consistent work over summer, Katie is on track to score 75%+ in Year 9 and ultimately an A or A* in GCSE Maths.
(Year 10) Yann’s Story
Yann had changed schools due to his family relocating and this, together with Covid, meant he had fallen behind. He was assigned to the lowest performing set in school and was expected to sit the Foundation Tier GCSE in Maths where the maximum grade he could earn was grade 5 rather than the Higher Tier.
In the summer term of Year 9 Yann was scoring between 30% to 40% in class tests.
In May 2023, in the summer term of Year 5, Yann joined ‘Fluent in Maths’ and attended just over 1 hour a week of Mathematics.
Within 9 months, Yann now regularly earns between 70% and 85% in school tests. Yann’s school has predicted he was on track to earn at least a grade 5 in GCSEs and agreed he can take the ‘Higher tier’ GCSEs in Maths.
With one year to go, Yann is now on track for a grade 6 or higher in his Maths GCSEs.
